Engineered wood products differ from solid hardwood in that they are composed of separate layers that are bonded together to make up the inner core. These base layers are often made of plywood. Some brands contain a medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or lumber core. The base materials are bonded to a layer of solid hardwood. This budget-friendly flooring can be refinished once or twice in future years as long as the hardwood layer is at least 2mm thick.
Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed over a concrete or OSB subfloor as well as plywood or existing wood floors. It can also be installed over radiant heat. This floor covering can be used anywhere in the home except bathrooms. It can even be placed in finished basements, as long as a moisture barrier is used. Typically, strips or planks click and lock together to float over the subfloor. Since the floor is not attached to the subfloor, it’s easy to replace any boards that become damaged over the years.
