Composition
Laminate is thin and flexible as well as comfortable to walk on since it is thick and warm. Plank thickness ranges from 6 mm to 12 mm. Most laminate flooring uses a fiberboard core that is composed of wood byproducts that are bound together with resins. A backing layer give planks stability. Sometimes this bottom layer has an attached underlayment that absorbs sound and helps to prevent moisture damage. The transparent wear layer protects the design layer. This top layer of the plank is made of aluminum oxide, which provides superior stain resistance. The 3D printed image features deep embossing that makes it hard to distinguish the laminate plank from the natural stone, hardwood, or ceramic that it imitates. Laminate warranties usually range from 10 to 25 years. This low maintenance flooring can be cleaned with a dry mop or broom or with a damp mop.
Waterproof vs Water-Resistant
Laminate can tolerate pooled water or other liquid since a well-installed floor has tight seams and good baseboards or moldings. But spills should be cleaned up almost immediately to avoid damage to the floor. Since water-resistant laminate has a fiberboard core, planks will swell if exposed to liquids for a long time. Also, the design layer may peel away from the core. In contrast, waterproof laminate is backed by a warranty that guarantees the flooring won't sustain damage when liquids are cleaned up in a reasonable amount of time. While the amount of time varies among brands, it is usually no longer than one day.
